Healthy 3rd Graders

Dear Parents and Students,

With all the viruses going around, I am happy to report that no third grader has been absent.  There is a warm feeling in my heart when I see each third grader’s face in the mornings and know they are all healthy!  Students, keep on eating healthily and wear those sweaters and scarves!

Curriculum progress during week 19:

Math:  We are busy with Chapter 11 and played around with fact families. We are very good at division by 3 and 4!

English:  We did review on Unit 6 and wrote a test this week.  The scores are looking good!

Science:  We finished Chapter 6 this week and learnt about soil and rocks.  Ryan Huang brought his rock collection to school and it was very interesting to see the igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

Reading:  We read Raising Dragons this week and followed reading the story with many practice activities.

We also listened to a story by the famous Australian author, Morris Gleitzman.  He is coming to visit our school on February 14th!!  We are all very excited that this well-loved and very talented author is making time in his busy schedule to come and visit Hsinchu International School!  We have just received our order of a large selection of his books for the library so I’m sure students will be eager to borrow them.

Students have been working on the Planet Presentation project.  They were all allocated their study planets and have been very productive in the Computer class with Mr. Harris.  There is a very helpful link on Mr. Harris’s blog.  Students, you can follow this link:

Our student of the week is Teressa Lee. Teressa is making remarkable progress in all subjects and she has beautiful manners! Congratulations, Teressa.

Take care, everyone!  Stay healthy!

Warmth comes from the inside :)

Dear Parents and Students,

What a cold week!  But the faces, smiles and great attitudes of the Grade 3’s give warmth to every cold day!

We ended the week with Airi Saito’s birthday party.  Happy Birthday, Airi.  May the years to come be filled with great health, good scores and endless happiness.  Thank you for celebrating your birthday with us and treating us with super delicious pizza and strawberries.

Students, well done on the tests this week!  The Science scores look really good!  Remember about coming Wednesday’s English test (January 19th, 2011) on Pronouns (Unit 6).

Curriculum progress in Week 18:

Math:  We finished the eighth lesson of Chapter 10.  The Grade 3’s are very good at Division.
English:  Students learnt the meaning of possessive pronouns and homophones and how to write contractions.
Reading:  We did phonics, learnt about possessive nouns and discussed our story, Dogzilla.
Writing:  Students wrote the endings for their stories this week and checked their friends’ writing.
Science:  The Grade 3’s started with Chapter 6, Earth’s Crust.

The Grade 3’s received their new Oral Presentation assignment.  Students have to choose two planets, do research, compare them, and present their findings on February 25th, 2011.  One planet has to be an Inner Planet and the other one has to be an Outer Planet.  We work on this assignment in cooperation with the Computer Studies class.  Mr. Harris is going to teach the students how to make a Power Point presentation in his Computer class and students have to use their Power Point document to present in the Oral Presentation class.

Our Student of the Week is Evelyn Hsu.  Evelyn is improving very well in all areas of school, especially Math.  She is also very helpful and caring.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone.
Stay warm!

Welcome back!

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back to school! I trust that everyone had a good time during winter vacation. I sure did! I visited India and it was a privilege and a lot of fun to experience the culture, food and tourist attractions there. What an interesting country!

We started on Wednesday with great energy! Here’s an update of our progress:
Math: We started with Chapter 10. We did the first three lessons on Division.
Science: We finished and reviewed Chapter 5.
English: We started Unit 6, which is about Pronouns.
Reading: We read and had a class discussion on the first story of the third theme in the book. The story’s name is Dogzilla and it was very funny.
Writing: In writing we didn’t write our own holiday-adventure-story; instead, students had to write someone else’s story.

Test dates:
Math: January 10th, 2011 (Chapter 8&9)
Science: January 12th, 2011 (Chapter 4 & 5)
English: January 19th, 2011 (Unit 6)

Students, please make sure that you still have enough classroom supplies such as tissues, sanitizer wipes, glue, pencils etc.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone. Stay warm and healthy!
