No typhoon in Grade 3!

Dear Parents and Student,

I hope you all had a great week with the wind and the rain!  Everything went smoothly in the Grade 3 classroom this week though.

Thank you, students, for your brilliant science presentations.  It was very interesting to hear of some extinct animals.  We all learnt a lot from each other.  Thank you for your hard work and for sharing your knowledge with us all.  We had a lot of fun!  I can see many future teachers!

On Wednesday, October 27th, we will have our Halloween Fancy Dress Day.  We will start the day with a parade to the basketball court where classes will give a short performance.  The rest of the day will be spent on fun Halloween activities.  We allocated some class time towards practicing our Halloween parade song.  We hope that you can come and join us as we are going to make our debut with Monster Mash!

Parents, please keep in mind the dates for the parent-teacher appointments.  They are November 9th and November 10th.  I also want to thank all parents for supporting your children in their schoolwork.  I want to encourage parents to get involved with your child’s homework without doing it for them.  They are all very capable and they are learning to be more independent.

Curriculum Progress for week 8

Math:  We finished Chapter 5 (Subtraction)
Social Studies:  We completed Chapter 3.  It was very interesting learning about mountains and deserts.
English:  We also finished Unit 3 and did many exercises on verbs.
Writing:  We all wrote a friendly letter this week.
Science:  We learnt about how species and individuals in a species vary.  We learnt about extinct animals from each other.

Our student of the week is Airi Saito.  Airi is a very helpful student and has beautiful manners.  She is conscientious and her work is always neatly and well done.  Congratulations, Airi!

Have a splendid weekend, everyone!

Champions!

Dear Parents and Students,

What an exciting week of oral presentations, a birthday celebration and hard work is behind us.  First of all, Happy Birthday to Evelyn Hsu!  Evelyn celebrated her birthday with us on Friday, October 15th.  Thank you Evelyn, for treating us with super delicious pizza!

Curriculum progress for Week 7

Math:  We started with subtraction this week.  All students are doing a fine job in Math class!
English:  We are still busy with Verbs.  This week we worked with helping verbs and the verb ‘be’.
Science:  We looked at plant and animal cycles.  We also reviewed vertebrates and invertebrates.
Reading:  This week we read different styles of poems.  Students seemed to enjoy all the poems.  Next week we will continue with poetry, and also try to write our own poems.
Social Studies:  We will continue with Chapter 3 in the coming week, and take a little break from Science.

Students did extremely well in their oral presentation “Show us how to…”  We learned a lot from each other.  I believe that many new recipes will be tried out this weekend!  Thank you for all the trouble and for working so hard on the oral presentations.

Students will also receive a book report assignment during the coming week.  Everything is clearly stated on the assignment paper.  The due date for the book report is November 2nd, 2010.  That is the day the school will reopen after the mid-term break.  Students, choose an interesting book to read.  You cannot use a book you have already read.  Choose a new book and improve your reading skills, vocabulary and general knowledge!

Students, remember about the Science project.  Come present your choice of an extinct animal on October 22nd.

Our Student of the week is Alex Lee.  Alex is not only a hardworking student, but he is also showing a lot of improvement in all areas of school.  Alex is also performing very well outside of school!  He is a chess expert and he is going to represent Taiwan in Greece!!!  Alex, we wish you all the best for the competition and for your trip.  You are already a champion!!!  Congratulations!

Our Fancy Dress Day at school is getting closer!  Get those costumes ready, everyone!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Fun and work!

Dear Parents and Students,

Another successful week is on its back!  Students did well in all the tests and during class they were all very productive and energetic.

We started to talk about Halloween.  On 27 October we will have a Fancy Dress Day at school.  Students, you may dress up in a beautiful or funny costume for our Fancy Dress Day - it does not need to have a Halloween theme.  So start thinking about something creative to wear on October 27th.   We will send home more information closer to the date.

More exciting news for our students  is that our Mid-Term Break is from October 28th to November 1st.  The school will re-open November 2nd

That is not all!  There is more!   On Monday, October 11th, there is no school for students.  A professional development day is scheduled on Monday so teachers will be working hard while you are having a free day!

Curriculum progress for week 6:

Math:  We finished Chapter 4 – Addition.
Science:  We studied the two groups, vertebrates and invertebrates, and we can categorize animals into the two groups.  We also learned about extinct animals and endangered animals.
English:  We did the 3 different tenses, present, past and future tense and we worked with verbs.
Reading:  We were very productive and did a lot of comprehension, sequence of events and cause-and-effect.  Next week we will start with poetry!!!

Science Project:

Each student has to choose an extinct animal he/she finds interesting.  Students need to do research on this animal (we will also use one of our science classes and make use of the computer room at school to do some research on the internet).  They then have to make an attractive poster with interesting facts and come and present it to us on October 22nd

Our Student of the Week is Sharon Tang!  Sharon is an outstanding student who is a good leader and a hard worker.  Congratulations, Sharon!

Have a fantastic weekend, everyone!
